Comparison of QORG radio/X-ray associations with SDSS Data Release 2 (SDSS-DR2) and SDSS Data Release 3 (SDSS-DR3) identifications. Introduction: QORG already includes SDSS-DR1. SDSS-DR2 (spectroscopic data released April 2004) and SDSS-DR3 (spectroscopic data released November 2004) give us scope to compare QORG optical selections for radio/X-ray sources with the new SDSS identifications. On the QORG side we use only objects without previous identification from the literature. On the SDSS side we use only QSO or galaxy identifications as those are likely radio/X-ray sources. Optical APM/USNO-A objects were found for the SDSS identifications, within 4 arcsec. Matching these SDSS and QORG optical objects within 28 arcsec (see below) yields 13192 pairings of which 11673 are identically the same object, 75 are pairs of objects offset by 1-4 arcsec which we take as identically the same (these usually result from APM/USNO-A2.0 multiple galaxy signatures), and 1444 are pairs of objects offset by 5-28 arcsec which we take as incorrect QORG optical selections, with the SDSS objects being the true ones. The 28 arcsec maximum offset was found by annuli counts which show that beyond 28 arcsec from QORG detections, the "random background" of SDSS spectroscoped objects outnumbers the nearby correlated objects. These background objects consist of SDSS QSO/galaxy identifications which are near to QORG radio/X-ray sources, but are not in fact those sources. These objects slightly contaminate the sample given below, causing the analysis below to slightly understate the actual QORG performance. However, the analysis still shows that QORG accuracy corresponds to its listed confidence. All 13192 identifications are listed individually at the bottom of this page. The hit percentage (agreement between QORG and SDSS on the optical object) rises from ~60% at the QORG minimum confidence level to 94.8% at the highest QORG confidence. It is expected that background contamination is preventing us from reporting even better performance for the 100% (i.e., 98%-100%) confidence bin, as discussed in the introduction. The small shortfall in performance in the 100%-confidence (i.e., 95%-100% confidence) bin may be due to the continuing presence of radio sidelobes which are radio artefacts of a very regular configuration which would fool our algorithm where not previously trapped. There is also evidence of a residual level of false optical identifications of true lobes for which the true centroid is too faint for our optical data; this level looks to be around 5%. In other words, if we accumulate the confidence %s for all 13192 objects in this test, how does the actual strike rate compare to the projected figure compiled by the accumulated confidence figure? QORG's overall QSO accuracy, which compares QSO strike rate to listed QSO likelihood, is 108.6%, so QORG is overperforming here. This is probably due to the preponderance of galaxies in QORG's identified objects which are used to calculate probabilities, thus causing galaxy confidence to be listed slightly too high, and QSO confidence slightly too low. Also notable is that radio associations are overall underperformed at 97.2% but have good QSO performance at 100.5%, and X-ray associations have good overall performance at 100.9%, and their QSO performance is strongly overperformed at 126.3%. This again is probably a function of the identified objects which were used to pro-rata out the galaxy and QSO likelihoods. The 13192 individual matches between new SDSS-DR2/3 QSO/galaxy objects (not in SDSS-DR1) and not-previously-identified QORG radio/X-ray-to-optical associations are listed below. These individual matches accumulate to the analysis totals given above. Meanings of Columns: (1) QORG ID, taken from the 1st column of QORG, i.e., J2000 position of the QORG optical object. (2) QORG type, X = X-ray association, R = radio core association, 2 = double lobe declaration. (3) Y = QORG object agrees with SDSS object. Usually dist (7) = 0; can be up to 4 arcsec, as a distance of 1-4 arcsec usually results from APM/USNO-A2.0 multiple galaxy signatures. (no Y) = SDSS pinpointed a different object than the QORG detection. Dist (7) is from 5 to 28 arcsec. Beyond 28 arcsec, annulus analysis indicated that QORG and SDSS were treating different objects, on average. In total, it is expected that many objects of distance 10-28 arcsec given below will be for different optical objects, and that our inclusion of all such objects sets a lower bound to QORG identification accuracy. (4) QORG % confidence that its optical object was correctly associated to the radio/X-ray detection. (5) QORG % confidence that its optical object was a QSO. (6) QORG % confidence that its optical object was a galaxy. (7) Distance from QORG optical object to SDSS optical object, in arcsec. 0 = same object. (8) SDSS ID, truncated to QORG style (as our astrometric resolution is just 1 arcsec). (9) SDSS type, Q = QSO, G = galaxy. Other SDSS types (star & unknown) are not used here, as we use only those SDSS identifications which are likely to be responsible for radio/X-ray detection. (10) SDSS-provided redshift (11) R magnitude of SDSS optical object, from the APM/USNO-A optical catalogue used in QORG. (12) B magnitude, as in (11).
