The uncharted galaxy PGC 2998 -- puffs of smoke The galaxy PGC 2998 has been photographed as part of the Digitized Sky Survey. Apart from this, no studies have been done of this solitary spiral which is located at a medium distance from us of about 200 Mpc. In a sparse patch of sky this galaxy appears to be ejecting blobs of matter at regular intervals. In the picture at right (3 arcmin on edge) object F would be (in this scenario) the first of the objects to have been ejected, followed at regular intervals by objects E, D, C, B, and A which appears still elongated from its recent ejection. There is also the hint of a thread of material between D and E. However, object D is the QSO Q0048-2626. Is this superposition, or is it being lensed, or may there be a genuine connection? A big telescope's attention is needed to clarify what kind of busy galaxy PGC 2998 has been. The table below gives the details of the galaxy and its objects. |
